What makes Woolmarket House unique?

Woolmarket House encourages further exploration. The building is made up from several buildings that have been incorporated over time, into its present configuration. The bedrooms reveal their earlier forms, one with its timber structure clearly exposed. The other more like a little apartment within the house, with its earlier features and faint reminders of windows and doors in the exposed walls. To make the most of its origins there is an eclectic assemblage of up-cycled, re-purposed, antique and contemporary furniture dispersed throughout this eccentric building. The house is also home to a contemporary art collection, and antique market finds from Paris, New York, Brussels and Stockholm. There are glass fronted display cases from the Ashmolean Museum, Oxford, alongside hand-woven rugs from Jaipur, India and sleek school chairs from a flea market in Amsterdam.

The bed and breakfast is located in the medieval centre of King’s Lynn and a short walk (ten minutes) or taxi ride from the main railway station. If you are driving we can arrange for parking as part of your booking - there is a car park 4 minutes walk from the front door. Guests enjoy en-suite bathrooms, free WiFi, access to subscription TV (Sky), a selection of bottled water as well as coffee and tea (including decaf and herbal). There is seating in both rooms with shelves lined with books, to read if you like, during your stay. Children under 2 years old are accommodated free of charge, but please bring their preferred food and any high-chair or cot they may need in the room. We are a non-smoking B&B and do have a pet of our own, Bodhi - a Bedlington Terrier/Whippet cross, who is chummy with guests, but not always comfortable with other dogs. While fully domesticated and not a growler or a howler, he is not allowed into guest’s rooms.

Sleep in comfort

The beds at Woolmarket House are comfortable, one is king-size with a hand-built mattress which is generally firm, and made by Litvinoff & Fawcett, Shorditch, London. The other softer and a standard double, made by a trusted high-street brand. They are made-up using a mixture of Egyptian cotton with a higher thread count, and handmade, antique indian covers, with goose-down duvets, or a reliable, lightweight artificial fibre for those with feather allergies.

Stylish surroundings

Woolmarket House’s interior is a comforting patchwork of old and new design choices, compiled with care and attention to detail. A few proven 18th and 19th-century English classics are interspersed with contemporary pieces from Scandinavia, Italy, Spain, France, Germany, India, South Africa and Japan, in a remarkable building that has stood here for a long time. During the last five centuries it has been a merchant’s house, accommodation for the clergy, a hotel, and more recently a pub.

What Woolmarket House Guests Are Saying

We had a wonderful time in your most amazing house - we feel privileged to have been able to sleep in such a unique room.  And the breakfasts were fantastic!

— Robert and Andrea, Suffolk

Breakfast

Reflecting our location, close to some of the most productive farmland in the country, West Norfolk and the Cambridgeshire Fens, our breakfast menu features locally sourced, seasonal produce. This includes expected options like a good quality granola and/or muesli, Greek yogurt, fresh fruit, artisan bread, croissants, a proper English breakfast, or smoked salmon with scrambled eggs. We can accommodate gluten-free, vegetarian, and vegan diets. But it is a good idea to let us know your dietary requirements in advance of your arrival, we prefer to source fresh ingredients rather than resorting to processed vegan substitutes.

Stay - free of fuss

The soap is French and lightly scented. We provide decent quality cotton robes and towels in each of the en-suit bathrooms as well as a hairdryer. We do not provide complimentary shampoo, slippers, bath bombs, biscuits or chocolates. We have found guests prefer to bring their own shampoo, but there is bubble bath in the bathrooms for those who want a good soak. Both bathrooms are en-suite and have tubs, only the Merchant’s Room has a separate walk-in shower. Both baths do have hand-held shower fittings. We also provide printed guides on the best places to eat, drink, and explore nearby places of interest.

Designed for most needs

There is plenty of storage and hanging space in both rooms. We have furnished the house with modern furniture as well as a few antique items. Hand-painted plan chests, molded plywood wood cabinets, french farmhouse wardrobes, sit alongside decorative bergere bedroom chairs and other unique pieces. You should find space for your gear, whatever the reason for your stay - whether that is a wedding, a beach holiday, a concert, for work, or an off season coastal walk. Most visitor activities can be catered for.

Relax and recharge

Our many bookcases are filled with a wide variety of books covering different topics and genres. You are welcome to browse the books as you like, please treat them carefully. Our books have been collected over the years, or given by family and friends, so are often personal to us. We would appreciate it if you would place them back on the shelves when you are finished with them. If you wish to catch up on the news, both rooms have a television linked via Sky into TV on demand, or you may choose to use your devices, taking advantage of the free WiFi.
